Unsung Hero #25 – Charles Harvey, Utilities Plant Worker
Without the #unsungheroes that work at the university power plant (no matter the weather or time of day), we would not have heat and electricity for our dorms, offices, and classrooms!

We encourage you to acknowledge workers like Charles and thank them for their service to our community! Check out this week’s Unsung Hero #25 – Charles Harvey, Utilities Plant Worke

We control the power, heat, and electricity for the campus! Without power, our university and hospital can’t function.. without generating steam through the plant, students do not have hot water or a warm bedroom..

Georgetown is like a little city and we are the heartbeat of that city. That’s why these guys take their jobs so seriously.. Just like a ship, you need to have a strong engine running.. We operate 24/7 no matter what..”

We encourage you to go out of your way to greet an Unsung Hero and thank them for their dedication & service to your campus or workplace! Even a simple “thank you” can go a long way..

“When the snowstorm Jonas hit earlier this year, it was all hands on deck! Many of us stayed on campus to shovel.. I’m not going to lie, it was back breaking work. There was 3 to 4 feet of snow and we were working 12-hour shifts.. Many of us weren’t able to return home to see our families for days. ..But what really made it all worth it was seeing the smiles on some of the students faces when they walked by us and the many thank yous that we got from them.. It feels good when people actually appreciate your work.”

The Utilities Plant is located right near the McDonough gymnasium. These workers are responsible for ensuring that every building on campus has air conditioning, heating and electricity. Students aren’t typically allowed to visit the plant which leads to rare interactions between the students and these unsung heroes. However, during the snow storm, workers from all of the departments at Georgetown had to help clean the university — which provided Dean & other new plant workers the opportunity to interact with the students for the first time

“My advice to the students is to find out where your gift lies…because that’s where the money is. When my daughter was growing up, I began to notice that she wasn’t able to read and write as well as the other kids in her classes – even all the way up to middle school. But she was street smart! She was also very analytical.. Throughout the years, she learned how to develop her gifts. Now she is the founder & CEO of her own business and for two consecutive years, it has been voted as one of the fastest growing minority businesses in the DMV area!”
